Eligibility Criteria
1.If you are an FIA student or graduate
To be eligible for CAT status as a Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) student or graduate, you’ll need to meet both academic and practical experience requirements.
This includes:
Completing (or holding exemptions for) the following exams:
FA1 Recording Financial Transactions
MA1 Management Information
FA2 Maintaining Financial Records
MA2 Managing Costs and Finance
FBT Business and Technology
FFA Financial Accounting
FMA Management Accounting
Plus, completing two out of the following three specialist exams:
FAU Foundations in Audit
FTX Foundations in Taxation
FFM Foundations in Financial Management
If you have relevant work experience, you may be eligible to claim exemptions for FA1, MA1, FA2, and MA2. You’ll have the opportunity to let us know about this within the CAT application form.
As well as completing the exams, you will also need to evidence a year of practical experience in a relevant finance role and complete the Foundations in Professionalism module.
The practical experience requirement includes:
- A minimum of 12 months relevant work experience
- Completion of the following Performance Objectives:
- Essential Objectives: Complete both
- Group 1: Complete 1 objective
- Group 2: Complete 2 objectives
- Group 3: Complete 3 objectives
- All performance objectives must be signed off by a qualified accountant who is either:
- Recognised by an International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) member body, or
- Recognised by law in your country of practice
- Time requirements can be signed off by your workplace supervisor.
- If you are employed by an Approved Employer with Trainee Development status at the Gold or Platinum level, you may be eligible to claim exemption from the performance objectives.
2. If you are an ACCA qualification student or affiliate
To be eligible for CAT status as an ACCA qualification student or affiliate, you’ll need to meet both academic and practical experience requirements.
This includes:
- Completing (or holding exemptions for) the following three Applied Knowledge level exams:
- BT Business and Technology
- FA Financial Accounting
- MA Management Accounting
- Plus, completing two out of the following three Applied Skills exams:
- TX Taxation
- AA Audit and Assurance
- FM Financial Management
As well as completing the exams, you will also need to evidence a year of practical experience in a relevant finance role and complete the Foundations in Professionalism module.

3. If you are an ACCA member
If you are a fully qualified ACCA member, you are automatically eligible to apply for Certified Accounting Technician status.
Fee
A one-time admission fee of £80 will be required during the application process.
